Bronski Beat, das waren Steve Bronski und Larry Steinbachek, die für Keyboard und Percussion zuständig waren, und natürlich Sänger Jimmy Somerville. Ihre 1983er Debütsingle „Smalltown Boy“ mit seiner offenen Anspielung auf Homosexualität hat das MTV-Zeitalter mitgeprägt. Ende 1984 veröffentlichte die Band das Album The Age of Consent . In der dritten Single „It Ain t Necessarily So“ interpretiert die Band drei Geschichten des Alten Testaments.
Das Klarinetten-Soli des Songs wurden von Richard Coles gespielt, mit dem Somerville später The Communards gründete. Diese hatten direkt Riesenhits mit den Remakes der 1970er Jahre Disco-Titel „Don t Leave Me This Way“ und „Never Can Say Goodbye“. Beide
